We are honored to share that Sacred Canopy, a project deeply personal to our team and the community it serves, has been awarded Gold at this year’s Illinois Landscape Contractors Association (ILCA) Awards. This recognition is more than just an accolade—it reflects the thoughtful collaboration, craftsmanship, and care that went into creating a space that blends reverence with function, seamlessly integrating landscape and architecture.
More Than a Project: A Place of Reflection and Remembrance
From the start, Sacred Canopy was never just about design—it was about purpose. Created as a permanent outdoor sanctuary, this space was envisioned to honor tradition while offering a timeless gathering, learning, and reflection setting. It holds an even deeper significance as a tribute to a beloved community member who was lost in tragedy, making it a space of both remembrance and renewal.
With such weight behind it, our challenge was ensuring that this new structure didn’t feel like an afterthought but a natural extension of its surroundings. The result is a design that respects the past while embracing the future—a canopy that feels both rooted and transcendent, strong yet delicate.
Challenges That Shaped the Design
Every meaningful project presents challenges, and Sacred Canopy was no exception. The existing landscape posed ecological complexities, including aging and at-risk trees, environmental stressors, and the need to harmonize with the surrounding terrain. Our approach was meticulous: working with the land rather than against it, designing with resilience in mind, and ensuring that the final vision felt effortless—despite the many considerations behind it.
To further enhance the setting, we created a garden and terrace that invites gathering while subtly guiding movement through a naturalized pathway system. Every element—each hedge, each seating area, each shade structure—was selected with intent, ensuring that this sacred space could function as both a place of contemplation and connection.
What This Award Means to Us
Winning Gold at ILCA is a testament to the power of thoughtful, collaborative design. But more importantly, it affirms the emotional weight and impact of Sacred Canopy. While recognition is always humbling, our true reward lies in knowing that this space will continue serving the community for generations.
