While conducting post-winter assessments of client properties, Scott Byron & Co. representatives have been observing a great degree of winter damage to boxwood shrubs. With over 200 crew leaders, laborers and others participating in the 2019 Safety Day event Saturday, April 27th, neither the cold weather nor a late morning blizzard could dampen the interest of those attending.
Scott Byron & Co. considers worker safety its highest priority. At the event, team leaders along with professionals from organizations like Stihl, Juhlie, and even the North Chicago Fire Department demonstrated skills and techniques designed to keep workers out of harm’s way. Some of the equipment used to build and maintain outstanding landscapes is inherently dangerous, including chainsaws, sod cutters, lawn mowers, trimmers, clippers and other hand items. Working with soil, masonry and large boulders is also physically stressful and requires proper technique to avoid injury.Read More

“I was playing sports in college and my father told me I had to make a decision about what I was going to do. I had a friend in the landscape architecture program at school, and I thought it looked interesting. On the first day of class, the professor told us to look around the classroom and said only one of us would graduate from the program. I called my dad and said, ‘That one person is going to be me.’”
Thirty-five years ago, Scott Byron started his own landscape design and architecture company after graduating from the program with a degree and an unwavering passion for his craft. This same confidence and excitement is still representative of Scott Byron & Co.’s work today.Read More

The Windy City is known for its towering skyscrapers, extensive suburbs, and urban landscape, but a recent trend brings Chicago back into the environmental spotlight. Over 500 buildings have invested in green roofs, building rooftops that are covered with vegetation. The lush and vibrant plants are not only aesthetically-pleasing but come with multiple social, economic, and environmental benefits for the urban and suburban homeowner.
Green roofs are an extension of the original roof with additional drainage systems to allow for the growing of plants. It is a unique element of a home or building rather than an interactive living space. Roof decks and roof gardens are outdoor living and working spaces with a design build. They are similar to outdoor terraces that are used for relaxation, social gatherings, and family time.Read More
